Curriculum

ETHICS AND THE INTERNET (Semester One) DAILY

This class allows students to look at ethical inquiries associated with the internet as we know it today: an online environment where information is produced and pooled through user activities such as blogging, media sharing, social networking, tagging, virtual world gaming, and wiki development. Students will debate over freedom of speech, privacy, surveillance, and intellectual property. A one-hour class.

PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE (Semester Two) Daily

In this class, students will study the essential procedures, principles, and conjectures of the natural sciences. The historical and social framework of the sciences will be considered. Subjects contain: science vs. pseudoscience, scientific explanation, scientific revolutions, the philosophy of space and time, the theory of evolution, theories of confirmation, objectivity in science, and realism vs. relativism. A one-hour class.

MATH (Semester One and Semester Two) DAILY

The math course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday.

SCIENCE (Semester One and Semester Two) DAILY

The science course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday. 

READING/ENGLISH (Semester One and Semester Two) DAILY

The Reading/English course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday.  

SOCIAL STUDIES (Semester One and Semester Two) DAILY

The Social Studies course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday.   

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (Semester One and Semester Two) TWICE A WEEK

The physical education course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the course will be extended to a one-hour class.

Curriculum

PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE (Semester One) DAILY

In this class, students will be introduced to philosophical thought from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present. The subjects will range from more technical complications (theories of meaning, reference, and truth; synonymy and analyticity; universals and natural kinds; private languages) to broader issues probing the association between language and culture (language games; radical interpretation; social change). A one-hour class.

PHILOSOPHY OF MATHEMATICS (Semester Two) DAILY

In this class, students will consider various questions to understand the logical and philosophical foundations of mathematics. Subjects will include mathematical truth, mathematical reality, and mathematical justifications (knowledge). A one-hour class.

The math course will remain the same, in accordance with the current USA/UK curriculum. However, the length of the daily course will be extended to a one-hour class, Monday through Friday.

SYMBOLIC LOGIC (Semester One) DAILY

In this class, students will study logic itself-to demonstrate things about the system of symbolic logic. This class is consequently mainly about logic. Subjects comprise second-order logic and basic set theory; the soundness, consistency, and completeness of first-order logic; the incompleteness of arithmetic; Turing computability; modal logic; and intuitionistic logic. A one-hour class.

MODERN METAPHYSICS AND EPISTEMOLOGY (Semester Two)

In this class, students will examine modern research in these essential capacities of philosophy: metaphysics: freedom, causality, time, fictional or possible objects, moral realism, and the origin and structure of the universe. The subjects in epistemology will be: realism and relativism; theories of justification; perception; epistemic values and duties; naturalized and experimental epistemology. A one-hour class.

MODERN SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY (Semester One) DAILY

In this class, students will concentrate on crucial topics in contemporary Anglo-American (or “analytic”) social and political philosophy. Subjects will comprise an investigation of John Rawls’s theory of justice and the work of critics of that theory, the value of equality, and issues about global justice. A one-hour class.

SENIOR SEMINAR (Semester Two) DAILY

This capstone experience in philosophy is for seniors at Graham High School. The main purpose of the class is for students to get an overview of their lives by scrutinizing the effectiveness of various methods of philosophy. A one-hour class.
